Nautilus International and the RMT are receiving pledges of support from other maritime unions and workers who are furious about the decision by P&O Ferries to make all 800 UK-based seafarers redundant and replace them with cheaper agency crew.
In Hull, where the Bahamas-registered passenger and cargo ferry Pride of Hull currently serves the Hull-Rotterdam route, dockers are refusing to handle the re-crewed ferry.
In addition, the cooperative of Humber Pilots is raising professional objections to handling the vessel if it is crewed with agency staff. The pilots have informed Nautilus that they are both outraged by the company's disgraceful actions, and that they are not comfortable with the use of an inexperienced crew as this can cause serious problems if they are unfamiliar with the operation of the vessel.
