Dover diver’s 'wrexpeditions'
Shipwrecks of the Dover Straits by Stefan Panis
This attractive new book is a highly pictorial yarn reliving dive expeditions of merchant and military shipwrecks in the Dover Straits, by the author and experienced underwater photographer Stefan Panis.
In this first work of a planned series, 18 wrecks are explored – complete with colour photos and historical context. Highlights include the SS Strathclyde, struck in 1876 by the German steamship SS Franconia – an incident which led to the adoption of international territorial waters law by the British parliament; and the cable ship HMTS Monarch, launched in 1883, which struck a mine off Folkestone after 32 years of service and sank with a new Irish Sea cable.
